Interpretation of laboratory data


Critical analysis of patient laboratory data to aid in medical decision-making.

Objective:

Early detection of possible alterations in the patient’s analytical parameters.

Material:

– Analytical analysis. – Nursing records. – Normal laboratory values.

Procedure:

– Upon receipt of an analytical result from the patient, analyze the laboratory values taking into account:

(a) Be aware of the laboratory’s reference ranges. b) Recognize physiological factors that may affect laboratory values, including gender, age, pregnancy, diet, time of day, activity level, and stress. c) Recognize the effects of drugs on laboratory values. d) Monitor sequential results for trends and abrupt changes. – Report sudden changes and critical laboratory values to the physician immediately. – Analyze whether the results obtained are consistent with the patient’s behavior and clinical status. – Record in the nursing documentation: laboratory values, date and time of arrival, incidents, and patient response.
