Urine samples


Obtaining a urine sample for analytical analysis

Collection of urine sample for analytical study.

Objective:

To obtain sufficient volume of urine in suitable conditions for analytical determination.

Equipment:

– Urine trough. – Clamp clamp. – Equipment necessary for bottle and wedge handling.

Equipment:

– Non-sterile gloves. – Sterile gloves. – Sterile urine bottle. – Antiseptic solution. – 1 syringe of 10 cc. – Sterile gauze. – 1 10 ml tube (without heparin). – 1 Identification label. – Nursing records. – Necessary material for the procedure handling wedge or bottle.

Procedure:

– Perform hand washing. – Prepare the material. – Preserve the patient’s privacy. – Inform the patient of the procedure. – Ask the patient and family to cooperate. – Put on sterile gloves. – If the patient is autonomous, ask him/her to urinate directly into the cup provided for this purpose. – Explain to the patient to discard the first portion of morning urine. – If the patient is bedridden, place wedge or bottle. – Pour the urine from the container wedge or bottle into the tube.

– If the patient has a urinary catheter, collect the urine sample through the distal tap. – Leave the patient in a comfortable position. – Remove the material. – Identify tube and send to the laboratory with the request. – Remove gloves. – Perform hand washing. – Record in the nursing documentation: procedure, date and time, incidences and patient’s response.

Observations:

– In children and elderly, who do not control sphincters: Wash genitals thoroughly and dry with sterile gauze. Place sterile collector around the perineum and remove when there is urine and then deposit it in the tube. – Check that the containers with the samples are perfectly closed.
